THINGS 4 FREE

During our trip we´ve found lots of things to do and get for free, and we will list as much as possible on this page.
There´s  also a lot of useful things on the web,  so a tip is to search for "free things to do in..." every time you travel to a new city. Many places have free muséeums and artgalleries, happenings and activities you could take part of.

"Dumpster diving (known as skipping in the UK) is the practice of sifting through commercial or residential trash to find items that have been discarded by their owners, but which may be useful to the dumpster diver." (Wikipedia )
People who do this is sometimes referd to as "Freegans". Freeganism is an anti-consumerist type of lifestyle where one believes in recycle and sharing, not wasting anything but making use of most things.
When it comes to food, many stores and supermarkets throw away perfectly eatable food after the date expired, lots of them still in their packages. Big markets are a good place to find vegetables and fruit, sometimes meat and fish, and most bakerys  throw away bread every day. Sometimes you could just ask, wich we often do, but other times you literally search the dumpsters for good food, and you can find ALOT of amazing food, you often wonder why they threw that away.
We´ve found a couple of sites on the web that could be useful if you ever would like to try this:

There is also a searchengine in the right corner where you can search our blog for things we have written. There you can find more elaborate writings on for example "hitchhiking". Try it out.  It is totally free!

THIS IS WHAT WE´VE DONE SO FAR:

hitchhikingHitchhiking - a cool way of traveling for free. There is also alot of carsharing-sites, atleast one in every country, so check that out before you go.

Hitchwiki.org - This site have been invaluable for us during this trip; there you can find everything about hitchhiking, where to hitchhike from, hitchhiking translation books, a.s.o.
Hitchhiking - A lost art - A youtube-clip about hitchhiking.

Dumpsterdiving - We live in a wasteful society who throws away all sorts of things; -it´s almost unbelievable what we throw away. On this trip we´ve found clothes, shoes, food and awesome furniture (but ofcourse, that we couldn´t take). Check out these sites to learn more about dumpsterdiving:

Trashwiki.org - A wikipedia on dumspterdiving.
Freegan in Stockholm - A youtube-clip about dumpsterdiving in Sweden.
Oprah on trash tour - Dumpsterdiving on Oprah.

Free Coffee -  A very nice thing about the Netherlands is that you can get free coffee in the bigger Supermarkets. So if you find a coffeemachine standing in the market with cups and everything, feel free to take some.

wallace fountainWaterfountains - In France and Spain(and probably many more countries) we´ve found a couple of nice waterfountains to drink from.  Also, if you find a fountain where women are holding a roof, the water pouring in the middle, it is drinkable water. They are called "Wallace fountains" named after the man who financed the constructions, and are recognized as one of the symbols of Paris.

Free WiFi -  You can find free WiFi little here and there on the streets, but when it´s in café´s or the like, you usually have to buy something to get the code to these WiFi´s. However, on McDonalds across Europe it´s free, you only have to accept the terms to surf their WiFi. Sometimes though, the McDonalds have guards... so be a little bit sneeky.

Bakerys - Bakerys at closingtime often throw away the leftover bread and pastries that people haven´t bought from them, since they´re going to go "bad" for the next day.  This is where we get most of our food from. Try to just go and ask 20 or so minutes before they close, and don´t be afraid of a "no".

Cigarettes - If you´re addicted to smoking, as Kristopher, a good thing to have is a lighter. With a lighter you can lit someone elses smoke, and the chances to get one when you ask increases. But if there´s noone to ask, then there´s loads of tobacco to get... just on the streets.  A "good" thing then could be to have a tobaccopackage, or some sort of container where you can save the tobacco from the cigarrettebuts you find. All you need then is the papers to roll a new smoke. If you don´t have that, you could probably just smoke them as they are - just a bigger risk to get some sort of disease.

Tattoos - Come up with a crazy idea like we did, get a blog with tons of viewers and call around, it´s open alot of doors and for a company and its a good opportunity to market their company. We came a cross with one of the greatest tattoo studios i malmö named Offbeat Ink, and got one tattoo each!
